Using a menstrual cup or disc when you are away from home can feel a little awkward at first but with a few simple tricks, it becomes easy and stress free. Some people are comfortable rinsing their cup or disc in a public sink which can attract curious looks or even spark an unexpected conversation. If that is you, go for it with confidence.
If you prefer more privacy or feel uneasy about public sinks and germs there are plenty of simple ways to manage your cup or disc when you are out and about.
Emptying your cup or disc when you are away from home
If you have a lighter flow, emptying your cup or disc before you leave may be enough since both can often be worn for up to 12 hours, depending on your flow and product size. If you have a heavier flow or you are away from home for longer than expected, you may need to empty your reusable period product in a public restroom. Try one of these options.
Before you start: wash your hands thoroughly, then head into the cubicle.
- Skip the rinse — Empty your cup or disc into the toilet then wipe it clean with dry or slightly damp toilet paper or a tissue. Check that no pieces of tissue remain on the rim or base before reinserting it.
- Bring your own water — Carry a small bottle of water so you can rinse your cup or disc inside the cubicle without using the public sink.
- Use intimate wipes — Pocket-sized intimate wipes can be useful for a quick clean. This option is not ideal if you have sensitive skin as wipes can leave a residue that may irritate the vaginal area or stick to silicone so use them sparingly.
- Use an accessible toilet only if needed — Accessible bathrooms often have a sink inside the cubicle, which makes things easier. Still, they should be kept free for people who genuinely need them. If you use one, be respectful and quick.
Extra tips for public bathroom success
- Stop the splashback — Depending on the toilet’s flush strength, a bit of blood can sit in the bowl which is not a nice surprise for the next person. Pop a few squares of toilet paper into the bowl before you empty your cup or disc to help everything flush away cleanly.
- Keep a firm hold — Make sure you have a steady grip when removing your cup or disc over the toilet so you do not drop it.
- Do a proper clean later — Once you are home or somewhere with clean running water, give your cup or disc a thorough wash so it is ready for your next use.
After doing it once or twice, you will find emptying your cup or disc in a public bathroom is far less intimidating than it seems.
